| ERSTER AKT | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Erster Akt, Nr. 1: Introduktion | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The scene is a rocky area, here and there overgrown with trees, on both sides are smallish hills; there is also a round temple. (Tamino descends from a rock to the right, in splendid Japanese hunting-costume, carrying a bow but no arrows; a serpent pursues him.) TAMINO Help me! oh, help me! or I am lost, condemned as sacrifice to the cunning serpent – Merciful gods! It’s coming closer! Ah! save me, ah! defend me! (He faints; immediately the door to the temple opens; three veiled ladies come out, each carrying a silver spear.) THE THREE LADIES Die, monster, by our power! Victory! Victory! Accomplished is the heroic deed! He is free, thanks to our bravery. FIRST LADY (observing him) A pleasing youth, gentle and fair! SECOND LADY The fairest I have ever seen. THIRD LADY Yes, that’s true, pretty as a picture. ALL THREE If I ever gave my heart away, it could be to none but this youth. Let us hasten to our Queen and report this news to her. Perhaps this handsome man can restore her peace of mind. FIRST LADY You go and tell her, then; meanwhile, I’ll stay here. – SECOND LADY No, no, you go ahead; I’ll keep watch over him! THIRD LADY No, no, that may not be; I’ll protect him! FIRST LADY Meanwhile, I’ll stay here... SECOND LADY I’ll keep watch over him... THIRD LADY I’ll protect him myself... FIRST LADY ...I’ll stay... SECOND LADY ...I’ll keep watch... THIRD LADY ...I’ll protect him... FIRST LADY ...I! SECOND LADY ...I! THIRD LADY ...I! ALL THREE (each to herself) Then I must go! Aha, very nice! They want to be alone with him. No, no, that’s out of the question! What would I not give to live with this youth! If only I had him to myself! Still no one goes; it is not to be. I had better go. O youth so fair and loveable, O faithful youth, farewell until I see thee again. (The Ladies depart. Tamino comes to, and sees the dead serpent at his feet; but hearing someone else approach, he hides. Enter Papageno, dressed in a coat of feathers, bearing large bird cage on his back and carrying a panpipe.) | shorttag-1 | shorttag-2 | shorttag-3 | shorttag-4 | shorttag-5 | shorttag-6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Erster Akt, Nr. 2: Lied | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| PAPAGENO The birdcatcher am I – and always merry, tra la la! As the birdcatcher I am known by old and young throughout the land. I know how to set decoys and whistle just like my prey! So merry and carefree can I be, knowing all the birds belong to me. The birdcatcher am I – and always merry, tra la la! As the birdcatcher I am known by old and young throughout the land. I wish I had a trap for girls – I’d catch them by the dozen then. I’d keep them in a cage at home, and all the girls would be mine alone. If all the girls were mine alone, some I’d trade for high-grade sugar, then to the one I liked the best I’d give all the sugar she wanted. And if she then kissed me tenderly, she’d be my wife and I her husband. She would sleep beside me and I would rock her like a child. (As Papageno is setting down his bird cage, Tamino steps forward, and learns that Papageno is a simple fellow, whose awareness of the world is confined to his little straw hut and his livelihood – he exchanges the birds he catches for food and drink brought him by three Ladies of the Queen of the Night, whose realm this is. Tamino, on the other hand, is a prince, whose father rules many lands and peoples. Papageno, really terrified at the sight of the dead serpent, pretends to have slain it, until the Ladies enter, masked, to punish him. They give him water instead of wine, a stone instead of sugarloaves, and a lock over his mouth in place of figs. They give Tamino a portrait of the Queen’s beautiful daughter, and promise that happiness can be his if he can love her; they go, followed by Papageno, leaving Tamino alone, gazing at the portrait.) | shorttag-1 | shorttag-2 | shorttag-3 | shorttag-4 | shorttag-5 | shorttag-6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Erster Akt, Nr. 3: Arie | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| No.3: Aria TAMINO This portrait is bewitching, no eye has ever seen its like before. I feel as if this angelic picture were filling my heart with a new emotion. This something I cannot name, but I feel it burning here. Can this sensation be love? Yes, yes! This can only be love. Oh, if only I might find her! If only she stood before me! I would – would warmly – chastely – what would I do? I would, in ecstasy, press her to my ardent heart, and she would be mine forever! (He is about to go when the Ladies return, announcing the arrival of their Queen. She has observed his emotions, and commissions him to rescue her daughter from captivity by Sarastro, High Priest of Isis and Osiris. Darkness; the Queen appears from beneath the mountains amid thunder and lightning.) | shorttag-1 | shorttag-2 | shorttag-3 | shorttag-4 | shorttag-5 | shorttag-6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Mozart and Da Ponte use the theme of "fiancée swapping", which dates back to the 13th century; notable earlier versions are found in Boccaccio's Decameron and Shakespeare's play Cymbeline. Elements from Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew are also present. Furthermore, it incorporates elements of the myth of Procris as found in Ovid's Metamorphoses, vii. | Atto Primo, Scena 1 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Scene 1: A coffeehouse In a cafe, Ferrando and Guglielmo (two officers) express certainty that their fiancées (Dorabella and Fiordiligi, respectively) will be eternally faithful. Don Alfonso joins the discussion and lays a wager with the two officers, claiming he can prove in a day's time that those two, like all women, are fickle. The wager is accepted: the two officers will pretend to have been called off to war; soon thereafter they will return in disguise and each attempt to seduce the other's lover. The scene shifts to the two women, who are praising their men (duet: Ah guarda sorella—"Ah look sister"). Alfonso arrives to announce the bad news: the officers have been called off to war. Ferrando and Guglielmo arrive, brokenhearted, and bid farewell (quintet: Sento, o Dio, che questo piede è restio—"I feel, oh God, that my foot is reluctant"). As the boat with the men sails off to sea, Alfonso and the sisters wish them safe travel (trio: Soave sia il vento—"May the wind be gentle"). Alfonso, left alone, gloatingly predicts that the women (like all women) will prove unfaithful (arioso: Oh, poverini, per femmina giocare cento zecchini?—"Oh, poor little ones, to wager 100 sequins on a woman"). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Scene 2: A room in the sisters' home Despina, the maid, arrives and asks what is wrong. Dorabella bemoans the torment of having been left alone (aria: Smanie implacabili—"Torments implacable"). Despina mocks the sisters, advising them to take new lovers while their betrotheds are away (aria: In uomini, in soldati, sperare fedeltà?—"In men, in soldiers, you hope for faithfulness?"). After they leave, Alfonso arrives. He fears Despina will recognize the men through their disguises, so he bribes her into helping him to win the bet. The two men then arrive, dressed as mustachioed Albanians (sextet: Alla bella Despinetta—"Meet the pretty Despinetta"). The sisters enter and are alarmed by the presence of strange men in their home. The "Albanians" tell the sisters that they were led by love to them (the sisters). However, the sisters refuse to give in. Fiordiligi asks the "Albanians" to leave and pledges to remain faithful (aria: Come scoglio—"Like a rock"). The "Albanians" continue the attempt to win over the sisters' hearts, Guglielmo going so far as to point out all of his manly attributes (aria: Non siate ritrosi—"Don't be shy"), but to no avail. Ferrando, left alone and sensing victory, praises his love (aria: Un'aura amorosa—"A loving breath"). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Scene 4: The scene begins as a double wedding for the sisters and their "Albanian" grooms. Despina, in disguise as a notary, presents the marriage contract, which all sign. Directly thereafter, military music is heard in the distance, indicating the return of the officers. Alfonso confirms the sisters' fears: Ferrando and Guglielmo are on their way to the house. The "Albanians" hurry off to hide (actually, to change out of their disguises). They return as the officers, professing their love. Alfonso drops the marriage contract in front of the officers, and, when they read it, they become enraged. They then depart and return moments later, half in Albanian disguise, half as officers. Despina has been revealed to be the notary, and the sisters realize they have been duped. All is ultimately forgiven, as the entire group praises the ability to accept life's unavoidable good times and bad times. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Fiordiligi and Dorabella Despina? Despina? I don't begin to understand. Don Alfonso quietly to the men I've just dropped the papers; Pick them up neatly. Ferrando Ferrando picks up the contract. But what are these papers? Guglielmo A marriage contract! Ferrando and Guglielmo in a rage Merciful heaven! You've signed here, Don't try to deny it! Treachery, treachery! Let us find the villains And their blood shall flow In torrents, rivers, oceans! They make to enter the other room; the women prevent them. Fiordiligi and Dorabella Ah, my love, my sin is mortal And death alone I seek now; Too late I see my error; With your sword pierce this bosom That deserves no pity! Ferrando and Guglielmo Tell us all. Fiordiligi and Dorabella pointing to Despina and Don Alfonso Let them speak for us, That pander and that procuress! Don Alfonso Too true is what she says, And the proof is shut in there! He indicates the room by which the men first entered. Ferrando and Guglielmo go into it. Fiordiligi and Dorabella aside I freeze, I shiver with fright; Why did he give them away? Ferrando and Guglielmo come out of the room, without caps, cloaks and without moustaches, but in the false lovers' clothes, and burlesque their antics with Despina. Ferrando to Fiordiligi Lovely lady, A noble of Albania Bows before you! Guglielmo to Dorabella The miniature Exchanged for the little heart I return herewith, Madame! Ferrando and Guglielmo to Despina And to the magnetic doctor I give the honour Which he merited! Fiordiligi, Dorabella and Despina Heavens, what do I see? Ferrando, Guglielmo and Don Alfonso They're stupefied! Fiordiligi, Dorabella and Despina I cannot bear this torment! Ferrando, Guglielmo and Don Alfonso They're half crazy! Fiordiligi and Dorabella pointing to Don Alfonso That is the cruel man Who deceived us! Don Alfonso I deceived you, but my deception Undeceived your lovers, Who henceforth will be wiser And will do as I wish. unites them and makes them embrace Give me your hands, now you're united. Embrace each other and say no more. All four of you can laugh now As I have laughed and shall do again. Fiordiligi and Dorabella My love, if this is true, With fidelity and with love I will make good what I have done And adore you evermore. Ferrando and Guglielmo I believe you, my fair one, But I won't put it to the test. Despina I don't know if I'm awake or dreaming, I'm confused, I feel ashamed; I'm slipping badly if they can do to me What I have done to many others. All Happy is the man who looks At everything on the right side And through trials and tribulations Makes reason his guide. What always makes another weep Will be for him a cause of mirth And amid the tempests of this world He will find sweet peace. | 2/18-Glyndebourne-2006 2/18/marriage_contract-Glyndebourne-2006 2/18/Women/Ah,_signor-Glyndebourne-2006 2/18/Tutti/Fortunato-Glyndebourne-2006 | -ShortTag2 | -ShortTag3 | -ShortTag4 | -ShortTag5 | -ShortTag6 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
