The Mass in Music

The following started out as
an expansion of a “Table of Contents” for Bach’s Mass in B Minor
to include the complete text,
in both Latin and English, of the various movements of the Mass.
It then grew to include various other musical settings of the Mass,
and when it became large enough (in particular, incorporated 16 mass performances),
was moved to its own web page (this one!).

The “Scoring” is applicable only to BWV 232, Bach’s Mass in B Minor,
and is taken from the Latin text,
with the exception of switching the scoring for 5/1 and 5/2.
Continuo is present in all movements of Bach’s mass,
but omitted in the table to save space.

The text divisions are specifically aligned with those in Bach’s BWV232 Mass in B Minor.
The extent to which they align with the musical breaks in the other masses varies.
I have tried to figure out where the music in the other masses
aligns with the texts;
the above is thus not necessarily an exact correlation,
and certainly has no authority other than my (non-musically-trained nor Latin-fluent) ear,
working without access to the texts used in those performances.

Many early settings of the Requiem employ a variety of texts
that were in use in different liturgies around Europe
before the Council of Trent set down the texts given in the table below.

1 Introit Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus Deus, in Sion,
et tibi reddetur votum in Ierusalem.
Exaudi orationem meam;
ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
A hymn becomes you, O God, in Zion,
and to you shall a vow be repaid in Jerusalem.
Hear my prayer;
to you shall all flesh come.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.

6 Offertory Domine Iesu Christe, Rex gloriæ,
libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum
de pœnis inferni et de profundo lacu.
Libera eas de ore leonis,
ne absorbeat eas tartarus,
ne cadant in obscurum;
sed signifer sanctus Michael
repræsentet eas in lucem sanctam,
quam olim Abrahæ promisisti et semini eius.
Hostias et preces tibi, Domine,
laudis offerimus;
tu suscipe pro animabus illis,
quarum hodie memoriam facimus.
Fac eas, Domine, de morte transire ad vitam.
Quam olim Abrahæ promisisti et semini eius.
Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory,
free the souls of all the faithful departed
from infernal punishment and the deep pit.
Free them from the mouth of the lion;
do not let Tartarus swallow them,
nor let them fall into darkness;
but may the standard-bearer Saint Michael,
lead them into the holy light
which you once promised to Abraham and his seed.
O Lord, we offer You
sacrifices and prayers of praise;
accept them on behalf of those souls
whom we remember today.
Let them, O Lord, pass over from death to life,
as you once promised to Abraham and his seed.

11 Libera Me Libera me, Domine,
de morte æterna, in die illa tremenda:
Quando cœli movendi sunt et terra.
Dum veneris iudicare sæculum per ignem.
Tremens factus sum ego, et timeo,
dum discussio venerit, atque ventura ira.
Quando cœli movendi sunt et terra.
Dies illa, dies iræ, calamitatis et miseriæ,
dies magna et amara valde.
Dum veneris iudicare sæculum per ignem.
Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine:
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Deliver me, O Lord,
from death eternal on that fearful day,
when the heavens and the earth shall be moved,
when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
I am made to tremble, and I fear,
till the judgment be upon us, and the coming wrath,
when the heavens and the earth shall be moved.
That day, day of wrath, calamity, and misery,
day of great and exceeding bitterness,
when thou shalt come to judge the world by fire.
Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord:
and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Notes

Ockeghem:
Ockeghem seems to use a different text from what is now considered "standard."
Thus the text that appears on this web page may not be appropriate to his Requiem.

Victoria:
Is there a difference between the Victoria works?
Some of the literature suggests there is.
I am not sure yet.

Berlioz:
Berlioz seems to use a slightly different text for the Requiem
than the standard one I have quoted,
which is copied from Wikipedia (as of 2011-10).
In particular, some of the text for Berlioz is in a different order,
and some appears to be either missing or added.
Not much I can do to help,
so you will just have to be alert on occasion!
References to material which is out of order have a background in this color.
