1483 Martin Luther
Here the singer skips to the last verse. Was liegt doch in dem Krippelein? | From Heaven above to earth I come, To bear good news to every home; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, Whereof I now will say and sing. To you, this night, is born a Child Of Mary, chosen mother mild; This tender Child of lowly birth, Shall be the joy of all your earth. ’Tis Christ our God, who far on high Had heard your sad and bitter cry; Himself will your Salvation be, Himself from sin will make you free. He brings those blessings long ago Prepared by God for all below; That in His heavenly kingdom blest You may with us forever rest. These are the tokens ye shall mark, The swaddling clothes and manger dark; There shall ye find the young Child laid, By Whom the heavens and earth were made. Now let us all, with gladsome cheer, Follow the shepherds, and draw near To see this wondrous Gift of God, Who hath His own dear Son bestowed. Give heed, my heart, lift up thine eyes! What is it in yon manger lies? Who is this Child, so young and fair? The blessed Christ Child lieth there! Welcome to earth, Thou noble Guest, Through Whom e’en wicked men are blest! Thou com’st to share our misery, What can we render, Lord, to Thee! Ah, Lord, who hast created all, How hast Thou made Thee weak and small, To lie upon the coarse dry grass, The food of humble ox and ass. Were earth a thousand times as fair, Beset with gold and jewels rare, She yet were far too poor to be A narrow cradle, Lord, for Thee. For velvets soft and silken stuff Thou hast but hay and straw so rough, Whereon Thou King, so rich and great, As ’twere Thy heaven, art throned in state. Thus hath it pleased Thee to make plain The truth to us, poor fools and vain, That this world’s honor, wealth and might Are naught and worthless in Thy sight. Ah, dearest Jesus, holy Child, Make Thee a bed, soft, undefiled, Here in my poor heart’s inmost shrine, That I may evermore be Thine. My heart for very joy doth leap, My lips no more can silence keep, I too must sing, with joyful tongue, That sweetest ancient cradle song. Glory to God in highest Heaven, Who unto man His Son hath given, While angels sing, with pious mirth, A glad New Year to all the earth. |
was written by Martin Luther, founder of the Protestant Church.
Luther wrote this hymn for his five year old son Hans.
It was sung at the annual Christmas Eve festival at the Luther home:
a man dressed as an angel would sing the opening verses,
then the children would greet him with the verse,
“Welcome to earth, thou noble guest...”

O come, O come, Emmanuel
O come, O come, Emmanuel,And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Isaiah 7:14
Refrain
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.
Refrain
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
Isaiah 11:1
Refrain
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Luke 1:78
Refrain
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Isaiah 22:22
Refrain
O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
Refrain
O come, Thou Root of Jesse’s tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.
Isaiah 11:1
Refrain
O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.
Refrain
Of the Father’s love begotten
Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!
At His Word the worlds were framed; He commanded; it was done:
Heaven and earth and depths of ocean in their threefold order one;
All that grows beneath the shining
Of the moon and burning sun, evermore and evermore!
He is found in human fashion, death and sorrow here to know,
That the race of Adam’s children doomed by law to endless woe,
May not henceforth die and perish
In the dreadful gulf below, evermore and evermore!
O that birth forever blessed, when the virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Savior of our race;
And the Babe, the world’s Redeemer,
First revealed His sacred face, evermore and evermore!
This is He Whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord;
Whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word;
Now He shines, the long expected,
Let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore!
O ye heights of heaven adore Him; angel hosts, His praises sing;
Powers, dominions, bow before Him, and extol our God and King!
Let no tongue on earth be silent,
Every voice in concert sing, evermore and evermore!
Righteous judge of souls departed, righteous King of them that live,
On the Father’s throne exalted none in might with Thee may strive;
Who at last in vengeance coming
Sinners from Thy face shalt drive, evermore and evermore!
Thee let old men, thee let young men, thee let boys in chorus sing;
Matrons, virgins, little maidens, with glad voices answering:
Let their guileless songs re-echo,
And the heart its music bring, evermore and evermore!
Christ, to Thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to Thee,
Hymn and chant with high thanksgiving, and unwearied praises be:
Honor, glory, and dominion,
And eternal victory, evermore and evermore!
A repeat of the opening carol.

This is a reissue of a fantastic recording made by Deutsche Grammophon back in the 1970s. It is one of the finest recordings ever made of German Christmas music. If you have ever been in Germany during Christmas and attended some of the Cathedral concerts of the time, this music is instantly recognizable. It renders all other Christmas music, particularly that of the modern times pathetic by comparison

I have this in vinyl (Vanguard Cardinal Series) and would pay good money for a CD version! I have half of it on CD. This is my all-time favorite Christmas choral album. It is well produced, has an excellent choice of songs (some composers not well known to most) and is well arranged and directed.

It came to pass at the selfsame time, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that all the world would be counted, [Luke 2:2] and this estimate was the first and was at a time, when Cyrenius was governor of Syria, [Luke 2:3] and everyone went to be taxed, every man in his town. [Luke 2:4-5] Since Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, in the land of Judea to the city of David, which is named Bethlehem, so that he was of the house and lineage of David, that he may be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, who was pregnant. [Luke 2:6] And while they were there, the time came that she should be, [Luke 2:7] and she brought forth her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a crib, because there was no room in the inn. So geht! | Then go! ’Tis well, my treasure leaveth not, He bideth here with me, I will not ever let him leave me. His arm will in his love With soft affection’s warmth And deepest tenderness embrace me; He shall remain my faithful bridegroom, I will my breast and heart assign him. I know full well he loveth me, My heart, too, loves him fervently And shall alway adore him. What harm to me could any foe Amidst such fortune do now? Thou, Jesus, art fore’er my friend; And when in fear I cry to thee: “Lord, help!,” let me thy help behold! | So geht! Go then! Genug, mein Schatz geht nicht von hier, It is enough that my treasure does not depart from here, Er bleibet da bei mir, He stays here by me, Ich will ihn auch nicht von mir lassen.
